How to Choose and Maximize Use of Free Fonts

Sep 30
2010

Graphic designers understand their way around the Internet. With branding and graphic design becoming more and more important for companies, it is also becoming more highly competitive. To keep up with new software, new techniques and trends, graphic designers read design publications and network online at forums, blogs and design communities. One of the ways design websites encourage traffic is to offer designer freebies. Free fonts are an excellent way to offer valuable content and motivate graphic designers to subscribe to what the site has to offer.

Quality fonts are easy to come by, if you are willing to pay for them. However, signing up for the right blogs and forums could help you build your font database for free. There are plenty of websites that deliver all kinds of free fonts as long as you remain a subscriber.

Who doesn’t love free? Even if it is not a font you have a need for right now, having it in your font library could be beneficial for designs in the future. Even if the font is not attractive at first glance, there could be a design at some point that the font is the perfect accompaniment for.

Of course, for every positive there is a negative. The danger with storing and using free fonts is that a free font is much more likely to be overused than a font that designers need to invest in. An overused font is one you can recognize at a glance. If you see a font and can label it as Times Roman, Arial or Verdana, then that font is too common.

There are also fonts that are ridiculed in the design industry. It is important to understand what these are as well. If you are going to use a font like Comic Sans, you better have a really great reason. This font is evokes unfair, but fairly common disgust in the design community. Research a font before you use it to get some feedback about how the design is perceived in the community. Just because someone states that the free font is fun, new, creative and unique – does not make it so.

Also there is some confusion regarding just how free a font really is. There is a difference between a font and a typeface. The font is often offered as free, which means designers are allowed to use it in their designs. However, the typeface is still under copyright protection for the designer who created it. This means the font should not be edited or changed in any way. Some of the free fonts might have a licensing agreement that allows it to only be used privately, which means commercial design for the font is not okay. The majority of the freeware fonts are only free for personal use. Understanding the terms of usage for each font, free or not, is an essential part of using fonts in graphic design.

Another challenge that needs to be taken into consideration is the availability of free fonts. Even with millions of fonts available, it can be difficult for graphic designers to be free to use whatever font best works for them. The reason is that design is often restricted to fonts that the audience has available on their computer. If the targeted audience does not have the font loaded on their machine, the design might not be able to be read or will display incorrectly. Spending hours selecting the right colors, symbols, text and font might come to nothing if the end user is seeing something different than what you have designed.

So, now you are stuck with choosing between fonts that are readily available to your audience but that are not overused and tired. This makes selecting a font not only important, but also potentially frustrating. A great designer can find a way to include the chosen fonts as images so that they show up regardless of what fonts are installed on the receiving computer.

For graphic designers who do not understand the intricate nature of typesetting and font design, it is important to spend some time studying fonts. Designers need to understand the differences in serif and sans serif fonts, what makes a font and a typeface, what fonts are overused and how to balance different fonts. Without this knowledge, the fonts you think are wonderful may not send out the impression you were going for. There are plenty of free fonts available and adding them to your collection for future use is a good idea. However, understanding fonts and typography will stretch out the value of those free fonts even further.

Portfolio | Environments | USDF United States Dressage Foundation

Sep 29
2010

White Design Studio and MurphyCatton have combined again to put a new face on the USDF’s Roemer Foundation/USDF Hall of Fame exhibit for the 2010 World Equestrian Games or WEG. USDF is located in Lexington, Kentucky and is part of the Kentucky Horse Park. Our design solution centers around (2) full-sized two-dimensional horse-and-rider sculptures. These colorful icons symbolize the unison of horse and rider in the sport of dressage. A series of graphic panels line the perimeter wall, each highlighting a part of the dressage story. A 24′ time line panel knits together all things dressage. Additional information is delivered via two interactive video displays. This project is a great example of our ability to take a great story and make it engaging, educational and entertaining.

Envy Salon

EXTENDED GALLERY | 1234

Envy Salon came to us with a clean sheet of paper and asked us to help design a new salon here in Cincinnati, Ohio. We developed the name “Envy” with input from the client. We wanted something a little fun, a little forward, and something that got to the heart of why you might spend time and money on your image.

We designed an identity system, collateral and web site to complement the name and the range of products and services the salon was to offer. We tried to keep it clean and fresh and look like an attractive national brand while retaining some local charm.

Finally, we designed the salon itself. We planned the space, hired our own architect and designed the fixtures, lighting and graphics with the same forward, fresh feel we kept in the identity package. Stay tuned for the grand opening.

The Different Elements that Bring Together Minimalistic Design

Sep 28
2010

Minimalistic designs are trending in today’s world. The reason for that is designers are looking and aiming at creating designs that are lightweight and friendly to the viewers yet elegant in its own way. Who would have thought it would be trending with all the delicious technology that is being rolled out such as CSS3 and HTML5.

For those who are creating minimal yet modern designs, we discuss six different elements or aspects that deem a design minimalistic.

Grid Based

Grid based web design is major key role in minimalistic design and there are reasons for that. Grid systems already provide locations for certain bits and widths and lengths and the like for all sorts of applications and content that are being implemented. Think of it as the blueprint of a design, everything is well laid out for you; all you need to do is add to it and give it flavor.

The nice thing about grid systems is they allow you to play with creativity as well as strengthen your layouts and design eliminating busy and chaotic designs that generally arise. Therefore, following the grid system is a key to minimalist design.

Light Background Textures and Patterns

Another piece of the minimalist puzzle is to have lightweight background textures and patterns. Remember, minimalistic design is all about simplicity and lightweight elements, which means complex patterns and textures are not part of it.

The background textures or patterns should have a light shade or color transition from the foreground, making it a real background piece where the eyes can focus on the content or main container and not on the fancy or busy background.

Clear Typography

If the typography is not clear and fairly large for easy reading your design will not technically be lightweight. With that said, keep the typography clear and readable and in some cases hierarchical for a nice clean minimalistic design.

Minimize Icon Use

Let us face it, many designs either use icons way too much or do not use at all, leaving pages overcrowded or less understandable. Minimalistic design is all about being lightweight to an extent, and thus, minimizing icon use is key, which means that icons should be used where absolutely needed and eliminated or minimal where optional.

White space is Delicious

Minimalism in design is all about the white space. No matter how “minimal” you make your design, it is not minimalistic without proper white spacing. With that said, use white space liberally across your design and around many elements as white space keeps things separate and ultimately better and easier to work withand read.

Modern Technologies

Many minimalistic designs today use modern technologies to provide their approach or “uniqueness” to their designs. What this means is, they used jQuery effects and the likes, very minimally however, to achieve certain goals such as an auto scroll back to the top of the page or the likes.

Now you may be thinking that this is complicating the design and loses the whole point of minimalism however, minimalistic design is all about using technologies and elements minimally but not eliminating them as a sole factor completely.

With that said, I am not encouraging the extensive use of jQuery effects, CSS3 magic, and the likes, however, using the technologies wisely can set you apart from other minimalistic designs keeping it minimal while introducing new techniques and flavor to the concept.

Registration before Checkout

Many websites will not allow their new potential customers to add products to their basket before registering to the service or site. This is something you want to stay away from at any given point in time as your users or potential customers can go elsewhere to purchase similar products. With that said, leave the registration process for the checkout process where it is more suitable.

Showcase

Now that we have discussed elements and techniques that build on minimalistic design, it is best to see these techniques and methods in action to better grasp the idea of minimalism in design. Furthermore, we showcase four designs that we think are top in minimalistic implementation.

DBushell

DBushell

This design really incorporates minimalism while keeping modern technologies scattered throughout the design. The color contrast between the white and grey really pulls minimalism to the front while keeping nice touches of color about.

Toy NY

Toy NY

Toy NY is another great example of minimalistic design along with a mix of great animation using flash technologies. It proves precisely that minimalistic design is not all about limiting technology use, but rather how you use them.

Ah-Studio

Ah-Studio

Ah studio is just an amazing design implementing neat typography with great images and effects while keeping the entire design simple and lightweight. In order to keep it as simple as possible, they integrated all their pages or sub pages within one and using Javascript technologies, they implemented the navigation to scroll through the content to get to each individual page. Another great example that shows off minimalistic design while utilizing modern technologies.

Checkland KindleySides

Checkland KindleySides

This design utilizes flash technology to bring its design together. However, it keeps the minimalistic concept in check. It contains nice illustrations and animation effects while browsing about while it alongside keeps a nice lightweight minimal design throughout. A true piece of art that shows off what they do best in simple terms.

Conclusion

To conclude, minimalistic design is all about creativity and the use of technologies wisely in a way where the elements in use have blended in well enough to not make the design busy but rather minimal and modern.

Think of minimalistic design as having a clear canvas in front of you with a paintbrush. You can paint so many things on this canvas but what you choose determines whether your artwork is a masterpiece or whether it is something to set aside in your pile of other paintings. My point is, the amount of color, shades, elements, lighting, and others that you implement into your painting gives your painting a characteristic and classifies under many categories, and minimalistic web design is exactly that.

If you take all the available technologies and “paint” it together in a certain way, your design can be characterized as minimalistic or feature filled, or highly illustrated. It is how you use the available resources is what determines where it classifies. Therefore, in minimalistic design, let your creativity flow, but not exceed the canvas, or in this case, the characteristics or key elements that make minimalistic design what it is.

Portfolio | Interactive | Colonel De Gourmet Herbs and Spices

Sep 28
2010

Just short of smellivision. Colonel De is a retailer of herbs, spice and great advice. We designed his new look, his brand personality and his store. The challenge was to put the experience of going to see De, into an online delivery system, at a very low cost. We have deployed the new look with great success and continue to refine the back end to tie products recipes and advice together to create an organic market experience for buyers all over the world. If you’re thinking of trying out some of his product, try the “Holy Smoke.” We put it on just about everything.
